PUBLIC BUILDING
Art, Culture, History, Traditions, Uniqueness
Piazza della Libertà is the heart of the country's institutional life, on which stands the Palazzo Pubblico, seat of the Great and General Council (the parliament of the Republic of San Marino). The building stands where the 14th century Domus Magna Comunis once stood which was then demolished in the late 19th century and rebuilt between 1884 and 1894. Its inauguration on 30 September 1894 saw the presence of Giosuè Carducci as an orator, who on the occasion delivered his speech "on perpetual freedom".
The Palace was restored on the occasion of the centenary in 1994 by the internationally renowned architect Gae Aulenti.
